Plastic Earth

In dit werkstuk staat of voelt de mens zich centraal staan, gesymboliseerd door de rode lijn. Deze lijn trekt het weefsel bij elkaar en vormt op zo’n manier de wereldbol. De lagen eromheen zijn de lagen van de natuur en van het water, doorspekt met plastic. Door de drie lagen loopt een vierde laag, een tijdslijn waarin het gebruik van materialen aangegeven wordt. In het verleden zijn dat de natuurlijke materialen die we al eeuwenlang kennen. In het heden is het plastic maar in de toekomst worden nieuwe, nu nog onbekende materialen gebruikt. Deze materialen gaan we ontwikkelen door onze huidige inzichten m.b.t. plastic en de grote milieuramp die zich daarmee voltrekt. Plastic heeft wel zijn nut gehad want door onze huidige inzichten, gaan we verder met ontwikkelen en blijven we niet hangen in het oude.

In this piece, the human being is placed or feels themselves to be central, symbolised by the red line. This line pulls the textile together and in doing so forms the globe. The surrounding layers represent nature and water, interspersed with plastic. Through the three layers runs a fourth layer: a timeline indicating the use of materials. In the past, these were the natural materials we have known for centuries. In the present, it is plastic, and in the future, new materials will be used – ones that are still unknown to us. We will develop these materials based on our current insights regarding plastic and the major environmental disaster associated with it. Plastic has served its purpose, as thanks to our current understanding, we will continue to advance and not remain stuck in the past.
